When we say we’re going to leave at 8:30 in the morning that actually means we are leaving at 9:30…so 10 am arrives rather quickly and we depart, but not before stocking up on some last minute goods (overpriced wine and XS energy drinks…courtesy of Cheri). The minute we leave the driveway, Blake casually asks, “So, where to Hannah?” Her simple response “North” provided little specificity but it was a start. You would be happy to know that we did not use Google Maps but instead an atlas (#vintage). Oh, and the Garmin worked pretty well too…
Connecting the iPhone to Frankie J’s audio system was a severe struggle for the first two hours; however, in the silence, with limited distraction, we were able to focus on determining our destination. Driving down rather quiet roads, the fall leaves were unbelievable and the calm rain coming down reminded us of how beautiful and refreshing fall really is.
When we say gas mileage and Frankie J are far from cordial with one another, it is not an exaggeration. We get just less than 200 miles with a full tank…but despite that statistic, we are far from discouraged. The camp ground at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Paradise, MI, is fantastic and as the Ranger explained on the phone earlier in the day, “ it is WIDE open”. The campground is so wide open that “registration” required us, on our honor, to place a 20-dollar camping fee in an envelope that was then placed in the vacant office’s drop box.
So, here we sit at campsite 70… full from salmon burgers, warm from the fire, and satisfied in completing the first leg. Our neighbors, Chris and Melinda, two retired companions (they own a beautiful Airstream camper) who have dedicated a year to traveling, the United States, have already proved to be friendly and inspiring. We hope to meet many more people like them along the way.
Today we find graditude in crisp orange leaves, encouragement from loved ones, and neighbors who enjoy talking as much as we do.
